Coast Protection Board
Read More

South Australia’s coast is one of state’s most treasured assets, contributing to our culture, lifestyle and economy. South Australians have long recognised the significance of our coast and the need for collaborative and integrated management focused on conservation and protection of the coast.

The Coast Protection Board (the Board) was established by the Coast Protection Act 1972, one of the oldest pieces of legislation in Australia specifically dedicated to coastal protection. In the early 1990s the Board was a national leader in recognising the challenges posed by climate change to coastal communities, setting statewide planning policies to mitigate the impacts of rising seas to 2050 and 2100.

Current members of the Board include Mr Paul Caica (Presiding Member), Dr Bronwyn Gillanders, Dr Beverley Clarke, Mr James Buder, Ms Kathryn Galpin and Mr Leith Blacker.
It is this Board’s vision that South Australia’s coast is protected, restored and enhanced to foster resilience, and support thriving ecosystems and the wellbeing of communities.

As a statutory authority the Board is authorised to:

  • protect the coast from erosion, damage, deterioration, pollution and misuse
  • restore any part of the coast that has been subjected to erosion, damage, deterioration, pollution or misuse
  • develop any part of the coast aesthetically, or to improve it for those who use and enjoy it
  • manage, maintain and develop those coast facilities that the Board is responsible for
  • report to the Minister where required
  • carry out, or be involved in, research into the protection, restoration or development of the coast.

The Board has additional functions assigned to it by other Acts, such as the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016, the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act 2023, and the Biodiversity Act 2025.

The Board is supported in its duties by the Coast Unit of the Department for Environment and Water.
